Texas

Freeport, Texas
Back to the Gulf Coast! We’ve got reservations at San Luis Pass County Park, located southwest of the toll bridge that will take us into Galveston. Little did we know that the area would introduce us to crabbing, and that dolphin watching would be so easy right from the campgrounds! Fishing? Well that was in store too!

Canyon Lake
Oddly enough, we’re heading inland to find warmer temperatures and less finicky weather. Rio Guadalupe Resort in Canyon Lake will put us within an enjoyable motorcycle’s ride of the Historic Gruene District right outside of New Braunfels.

South Padre Island
The only tropical island in Texas, South Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico. We’re ready for sunshine and beaches!

Falcon State Park
Perched at the southern tip of the Falcon International Reservoir, Falcon State Park is perfect for continuing our quest for water while still in the desert!

Amistad National Recreation Area
Water! We are desperately in search of water! And yes, we are still going to be in the desert, following the border, but an oasis is in our sights! San Pedro Campground at Amistad National Recreation Area is our goal. Funny enough, we’ll be surrounded by a huge body of water, but the campground has none. We’re going to be boondocking!

On to the “Bends”!
If one is heading south on the west side of Texas, there are two goals that is surely on everyone’s list; Big Bend National Park and dipping one’s toes into the Rio Grande. When we began our research for mapping out our route, little did we know that there are two “Bends”; the Big Bend Ranch State Park is “right next door”. An added bonus! And Maverick Ranch RV Park at Lajitas Golf Resort seemed a perfect springboard for seeing both. On to the “Bends”!

Next Stop! Prude Ranch Here We Come!
We’re still heading south! Prude Ranch, a designated historical site in Fort Davis, was nestled perfectly in the Davis Mountains. From this basecamp, we planned on hoping on our Kawasaki trike for some hiking, visiting a local vineyard to sample some great food and wine, and, most surprisingly, to snorkel with the fish in the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool!
New Mexico

Sunset Reef Campground
Just south of the city of Carlsbad, New Mexico two National Parks called to us for exploration, Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains. Sunset Reef Campground was situated perfectly for our base camp. Previously an oil well pad, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has done a great job of reclaiming it for camping in the area. It’s not large and was full most of the time, even though some traffic only stopped for the night. The sunsets are beautiful and the fact that it’s in a designated Dark Sky Site makes stargazing a must (Thanks Derrick for introducing us to the Sky Guide app! We even witnessed the International Space Station soaring across the sky (thanks to perusing the Night Sky Programs on the Carlsbad Caverns’ website).
